Adult ADHD Assessments and Coaching

Do you wonder if you have ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neuro-developmental condition that can impact various aspects of life, including education, work, and relationships.  Despite common misconceptions, ADHD is not just about being overly energetic or distracted, it is a complex condition that requires understanding, support and sometimes professional treatment.

ADHD in adults can manifest differently than in children, and it’s often overlooked or misdiagnosed as other issues, such as anxiety, depression, or stress.

The symptoms of ADHD vary from person to person but below are the common difficulties people experience. These difficulties are usually present from childhood and persist into adulthood and can cause significant distress and disruption to everyday functioning

Common Symptoms of ADHD

Difficulties with attention

Hyperactivity

Impulsivity

  • Hard to focus

  • Easily distracted

  • Hard to stay on track and complete tasks

  • Find it hard to switch tasks

  • Restlessness, fidgeting, urge to move your body

  • Hard to relax

  • Always on the go

  • Extreme talkativeness

  • Making hasty decisions

  • Act first, think later

  • Impulsive spending or risk-taking

  • Hard to wait your turn, often interrupt others

Emotional difficulties

  • Frustration, irritability, emotional outbursts

  • Low self-esteem

  • A sense of chronic stress, pressure or failure

Difficulties with organisation and planning

  • Chronic difficulties with memory and time-management

  • Often misplacing things

  • Procrastination/avoidance of tasks that feel too much

Relationship difficulties

  • Strained relationships with loved ones or colleagues,

  • Conflict about tasks

  • Often feeling you let people down or don't perform well enough

If you recognise many of the above symptoms, and these difficulties have been present since childhood, an ADHD assessment might be beneficial. An assessment can lead to improved self-awareness and acceptance.  A formal diagnosis will also identify specific strengths and areas that require support. It can indicate potential adjustments which might assist at work or in education and can lead to access to medication treatments and/or psychological supports, if required.

The ADHD Assessment Process

I ensure assessments are carried out in line with NICE guidelines and the UK Adult ADHD Network (UKAAN)’s Adult ADHD Assessment Quality Assurance Standard (AQAS).  I take a neuro-affirmative and strength-based approach to assessments.  Appointments can be carried out in-person at my clinic in Odiham, or online. The assessment process has several stages:

  • Initial Screening Consultation: Discussion of your current concerns, history of difficulties and exploration of screening questionnaires (sent prior to the appointment). This is a 50m appointment and includes the scoring of screening questionnaires and an email summary.  Should this consultation indicate an ADHD assessment would be beneficial, a full assessment appointment will be arranged.

  • Comprehensive ADHD assessment: This includes further questionnaires and a structured interview using the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults (DIVA-5), along with gathering further information from someone who knows you well (preferably during your childhood years). Please allow 3-4 hours for this appointment.  Alternatively, 2 shorter appointments can be arranged.

  • Formal report and feedback:  After collating all the relevant information, I will analyse the results and discuss the findings with you. If ADHD is diagnosed, I will explain the severity and type of ADHD present (e.g., inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, or combined presentation). A comprehensive report is provided, along with a shorter summary of the findings for you to give to your employer or higher-education setting, if required.

  • Post-diagnostic support: If an ADHD diagnosis is made, I will discuss treatment options, which may include:

  1. Support to process the meaning and impact of a diagnosis on your life.

  2. Resources and information about ADHD

  3. ADHD coaching sessions to help develop strategies to improve organisational skills, emotional regulation, procrastination, fear of failure and to address any inner critical voice which might be holding you back.

  4. Signposting to medication prescribers, should you wish to pursue medication treatments.

  5. If other issues are identified at the assessment, I will provide recommendations for further evaluation or treatment.
